If you want to
drive a car, motorcycle or any other motor vehicle on a public
road, you must have a ‘certificate of motor insurance’
to prove that you are covered against any damage you do to other
people or their property. That is the minimum required by law
but it is likely that you will want insurance against your car
being stolen or damaged as well.
For most people, comprehensive cover is the best choice. However,
if you are young (under 25), you may find that comprehensive
cover is prohibitively expensive – particularly if you
drive a high-performance car. If this is the case, third party,
fire and theft is the cheaper option. If you drive an old (but
not classic) car, whether
you choose comprehensive or third party, fire and theft depends
on the value of your car: if the car is not worth much, paying
to replace it with a similar car could well cost less than comprehensive
insurance.
Cost is a significant factor in choosing a policy but the cheapest
policy will not always be the best: you must ensure that it
gives you the cover you need. Although most policies are fairly
standard, there are often differences in cover which can affect
which insurer you choose.
If you depend on your car for the school run school and the
out of town supermarket, or you live where public transport
is poor, make sure that the policy you are buying will pay for
a courtesy car while yours is off the road because of an accident
or damage. If you like to take your car abroad, a policy which
does not charge you extra for doing this makes sense. If you
do not want to take responsibility for getting repairs done
after an accident or you do not want to have to pay upfront
for repairs, make sure that the car insurance covers a direct
approved repair service. This may also include a free accident
recovery service which takes an undrivable car to the nearest
authorised repairer and may cover you for overnight acommodation
and public transport. These extra services come into play only
if you and the car have been involved in an accident: they will
not be available just because you break down somewhere.
